My interest encompasses challenging and exploring formalist conventions of abstraction. Observations taken from the built and natural environments inform my work as well as an array of art movements from Surrealism, Constructivism, Pop, and Minimalism. The fusion of the pictorial and the illusionistic combined with the notion of allusion come into optical play in the delineation of shapes that reference architecture, cartography, biomorphic forms, and cartoon iconography.
My practice is embedded in a process of labor-intensive precision, which oscillates between the hand and the mechanical. The reduction of elements rooted in a refined color sensibility and aesthetic intrigues my inquiry. Integrating fragments and juxtaposing my findings in interplay of imagined space reveals both tension and humorous intersections. I employ strategizing devices of disorientation and destabilization to probe irrationality and open possibilities. What appears as simplicity incites contemplation of my paintings to absorb meaning through the senses that requires a prolonged view.
